what color travels fastest through clear glass??????
please help. What color travels fastest through clear glass?
Light travels at a constant speed in vaccum... 3 x 10^8 m/s...
But in media like air, glass, different wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum travel at different speeds.
Refractive Index n is inversely proportional to wavelength of light.
But refractive index = Speed of light in Vaccum/Speed of light in medium
Hence, speed of light in media is directly proportional to wavelength...
Since wavelength increases from Violet to Red,
Red travels the fastest...
Violet travels the slowest...What color travels fastest through clear glass?
BS alert*
Some of the answers so far are correct in one detail or another, but your mostly getting a lot of BS. The speed of light in a medium v equals the speed of light in vacuum c divided by the index of refraction n. n increase (v decreases) with optical frequency (toward the blue) for most media, but there are important exceptions like plasma (ionized gas) and special glasses. The variation in n with color is the cause of ';chromatic aberration'; in camera lenses, and those exceptional glasses are included in the lens system to help compensate.
The underlying reason why n usually increases with frequency is a bit technical and has to do with molecular polarizability (the cause of n changes). The electron orbitals of an atom collectively oscillate about the nucleus in response to the electric field of light much like a harmonic oscillator. The characteristic (resonant frequency) is usually in the ultraviolet, and like a harmonic oscillator, the amplitude (polarization) excited by the (optical) driver increases with frequency if it's below resonance.
* A BS alert is issued when the majority of other respondents are giving answers which are wrong or, worse yet, not even wrong.
The question does not have enough information. Analytically, you should find out transperancy of the glass because, the spectrum of visible light rays has range of various frequencies so, some get get through and some not, all depends on glass transperancy.
ps. It also depends on atomic structure of the material of the clear glass (even though its clear!)
red light travels the fastest through clear glass
Light is made up of various colors. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, And Violet and travel together in light. You can use a prism to ';break'; the light and see the various colors. Light travels at 186,000 miles/sec. No one color travels faster than another. You may percieve a color to appear faster as one may be bolder than the other but this is due to influences or limitations around the situation.
If you are asking what color travels faster from colors of spectrum(separated), then it is the red; it travels faster in any matter; water, air, glass.....
that is because it has lighter weight of protons if we considered the duality behavior of light as a particle
you can check it if you put a red light and any other color of spectrum at the end of your room or far as you can and look at them your eyes will see the red faster of course you wont exactly see the time difference but you will fell it.
Also if you noticed that alarm lights are red for that reason.
Hope this information was useful.
